That doesn't sound right to me. I don't run any Debian around here but... It should probably "linux root=<dev> speakup_synth=<synth>" Where <dev> would be the partition you want to boot with or where the CD is - if you are using a CD However, you need a system you can write to so not totally sure if a live CD is being used. The <synth> field should be replaced with the 4 to 6 character name for the synthisizer you are using. Hope this is clear enough.
