Debian problems with sound playing.

Ok, I've a couple of strange problems here.

I installed Debian a couple of days ago, and eventually got it going.

I installed alsa by hand because I know how old the Debian alsa sources
are.
Anyway, it appears something is screwy with my sound devices in /dev, in
that although all the files exist, I ran the ./snddevices script, Bash
doesn't recognise them as such, and I get 'no such device errors', even
when I tried to cat an audio file and redirect to /dev/audio. What's
going on here?

In a possibly related problem, ogg123 won't even load because of a missing
shared library called libvorbisfileso.0, and I've installed every
conceivable ogg-related package, but to no avail.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Cheers.
