speakup.i SCSI problems

Okay, before I go and do this, speakup.i was built with an smp kernel and
this isn't an smp computer. I've read email that advises against using
smp kernels on systems and the kernel howto seems to suggest using smp
kernels on all intel computers whether they're smp or not. It's an advice
conflict here. What are the specific instabilities likely to happen using
smp kernels on single processor machines or were those isolated cases?
