I also have used the following construct in some recent scripts I've written... # Start of sample script while [ "$1" != "" ]; do pdftotext $1 shift done # End of sample script The shift command will "shift" the command line arguments over so that $1 will point to the next argument (file in this case) for each pass of the loop. It will stop when you run out of arguments. Note that the shell expands wild cards for you. This gets more tricky if you have to specify multiple arguments for the command or if you have to split out file extensions such as with the lame encoder. Then some more elaborate scripting will be necessary but this is a good place to start from. While I'm here, is there an actual maximum length for command lines in the shell like bash? I know DOS had limits like 1024 or 2048 or something like that.
