kernel question

I used the speakup.i image to install this system since there wasn't any
scsi equipment on it. Does that kernel have scsi emulation enabled or can
that be done without rebuilding the kernel itself? Ie managed to break
access to both cd's andas things stand I'm going to have to erase some sym
links to fix that problem. Without scsi emulation enabled it appears the
only way system backups can be done is on punch cards or floppy disks or
zip disks. I wouldn't be into this except my zip drive now does the
clicks of death and is only a space holder in this dell.
