I don't know how many of you folks using speakup would be interested here but I know Gene is using it and so am I. This is sc the spreadsheet for linux, just another thing I can do without booting to winblows! This is the author's announcement of the newest release and where to get it. In case you're interested. ----- Forwarded message from Chuck Martin <nrocinu at myrealbox.com> ----- Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 05:12:25 -0400 From: Chuck Martin <nrocinu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: Chuck Martin <nrocinu at myrealbox.com> Subject: sc 7.16 now available It's been quite awhile since I released version 7.15 of sc, and since that time, I've fixed quite a few bugs and made quite a few improvements in sc to allow me to work much faster and more efficiently at my job. Unfortunately, my job (which doesn't involve programming) has kept me too busy to update the documentation to match the changes, and I don't like releasing software with out-of-date documentation. Because of this, I now have two or three times the changes I've normally had in the past before releasing a new version, but I finally have version 7.16 ready, and it is now available at ibiblio.org in the usual directory (that is, /pub/Linux/apps/financial/spreadsheet). On the bright side, due to the long delay, this version has been in use much more extensively, and is probably more stable and bug-free than any previous version (although, I'm sure there are still more bugs--there always are). This version has far too many changes to list here, but here are a few highlights (see the CHANGES file for a more complete list): - vi-like abbreviations for quicker entry of commonly repeated data. - Shortcuts for entering navigate mode (if the last character in the command is "+" or "-" when entering data in quick numeric mode, the cursor controls automatically enter navigate mode) and entering the @sum(some_range) function (again, if the last character in the command is "+" or "-" and you have a range highlighted, exiting navigate mode puts the @sum function in the command line instead of just the range, and if "+" or "-" is used, you will remain in navigate mode so you can add or subtract more @sums easily). - Improved history search, including regular expressions. - Data may be entered row by row or column by column in a framed range, without exiting the scrolling part of the range, if craction is set to move down or right, and a new autowrap option allows this to take place even if autoinsert is set, autoinserting rows or columns only when no more wrapping can be done. - A new copy command (c.) which automatically enters navigate mode and copies the contents of the cell that is current when the command is invoked to every other cell in the highlighted range when the RETURN key is pressed, adjusting cell references as necessary. Also, a new pull command (p.) that does the same thing, but copies the contents of the delete buffer instead. - Two more new pull commands, pullfmt (pf) for pulling only the the formats from the delete buffer, merging them with whatever is already in the destination cells, and pullcopy (pC) that works like pp, but adjusts cell references like all other copy operations. - New commands to justify or center the text (labels or strings) in all cells in a range. - @date can now use a custom date format as a second parameter. - The range functions (@sum, @prod, @avg, etc.) can now accept an optional expression to limit which cells in the specified range should be included in the operation. - A new getkey command for use in macros to get a single keypress. - Braille mode now positions the cursor at the left of the current cell, which works better with text-to-speech programs. In addition, other users have contributed things such as limited locale support, a history file to carry a history of commands from one session to another, @lastrow and @lastcol functions, and plugins. These are just a few highlights, and the actual number of changes is much greater than this, including a lot of bug-fixes. Please let me know if you find any more bugs, and have fun with the new sc.
