linux and laptop modems

Do you need a network card as well? I'm actually in the market for a modem
as well and I was thinking about looking at the modem / network combo
cards so that I could get both in a single piece of hardware.
Not sure exactly how much they run but will look on the web to see what
ones work in linux.
