Cheryl, The simplest way to do what you want, in my opinion, would be to use a small 4 port hub or better yet a small linksys 4 port firewall hub. With this solution, you could communicate between the 2 computers, as well as use both computers on the internet. Another benefit to this solution, is that you don't necessarily need to have both computers in the same room. You could have 1 at your desk, perhaps beside the existing pc, 1 in the kitchen, perfect for looking up your favorite recipes on the internet, and one in another location through the house.
