Sorry, there is of course the mutt specific way of doing things, the effect of doing things the way I described is that nearly any program which spawns an editor will spawn your favorite one by default if you set those variables, so you don't have to learn how to do it in each program. I do this so I get ed instead of vi or pico in things like mutt, lynx, trn etc. Sorry for the confusion there.
