Okay, everybody relax. The error messages I have been haunted by have been resolved. Evidently while experimenting with that winmodem last Sunday its buggy Linux driver module somehow invoked a "multilink" option that created a database in /var/run/pppd.tdb. The presence of that database evidently was the culprit, even long after that winmodem was history. Paul's documentation on pppd contained the clue. All one has to do is RTFM!
