That is interesting, Greg - Provox takes extreme measures not to hog the processor, but it has still caused problems for me on some systems. Perhaps it depends on the synthesizer also. A related reliable failure for me has been when booting Linux from a loadlin in DOS. The loadlin banner and credits screen rapidly fills the synthesizer buffer and keeps it talking during the time the Linux kernel is testing for the presence of the synth, and as a result the kernel cannot find the synthesizer!!! Another case where the speech has to be silenced before letting loadlin execute. Maybe the loadlin screen output could be redirected to a null device - I have not tried that - but provox also has a command line parameter to shut the speech up, so it can be included in a batch file.
