I should think so. As long as you can boot the local machine, whether by 
floppy, CDR, or whatever, and connect to the net, this should work just 
fine, imho. 

I think you might want to keep data on the local partition, just in case 
you have to dive down to repartition. Don't know how dd treats restoring 
to a different sized partition, wouldn't expect it would be happy with a 
smaller partition, and don't have any sense about a larger one because 
I've never tried that.
