installing and using linux

Hello all. I have a few questions about installing and running it with
speech. First, is it possible to run it in a regular dos partition, or does
it have to have it's own separate partition. I have my whole hard drive set
as one partition, and would rather not change it if possible. Second, i have
a dsl internet connection, it doesn't require any special software, but I
would need to get linux to work with my network card, which is a basic
linksys pci card, is this possible? FInally, would there be someone willing
to spend some time helping me install and use this over the phone? Long
distance would not be a problem, but I would love to ask more about running
linux, since there are a few things like telnet and irc that just don't work
very well in windows.
