Question fro ma new user

I posted this 4 hours ago and haven't got my original message back much less
a reply so I'll try posting again.

I'm new so this is a little basic I'm afraid.
I downloaded Red hat 7.1 from a mirror server. I created the CD's. I
downloaded the boot disk for dec-talk express for red hat 7.0 as this was
the latest
on the site. When I boot my machine and type text, it boots but there is
silence. My dec-talk is connected to com1. The only explanation I can
think
of is that I am trying to install 7.1, therefore I might have the wrong
kernel. I could use a little help in finding out what I'm doing wrong or
how I
get the right kernel. I know the machine is booting up in text mode as I
had my sighted wife take a look.
