Hi, Kirk: Thanks for the suggestion. I did as you suggested and temporarily moved the top line of /etc/hosts down to be the second line, so that toccata.grg.afb.net would be the first machine defined for address 127.0.0.1. Regretably, this did not do the trick. The log of a fetchmail session is below. RE your attempt to send to me directly on this machine, tthe grg.afb.net domain is not resolvable. It is not registered anywhere, and has no name server. Here's the fetchmail session: fetchmail: starting fetchmail 5.6.0 daemon fetchmail: 5.6.0 querying mail232173.popserver.pop.net (protocol POP3) at F?s 23.Mar 2001, 09:17:22 EST fetchmail: POP3< +OK POP3 at wodc7ps1.ffx.ops.us.uu.net ready: Please see http://www.us.uu.net/support/usepolicy/ for Acceptable Use Policy. fetchmail: POP3> USER mail232173 fetchmail: POP3< +OK Password required for mail232173. fetchmail: POP3> PASS * fetchmail: POP3< +OK mail232173 has 0 messages (0 octets). fetchmail: selecting or re-polling default folder fetchmail: POP3> STAT fetchmail: POP3< +OK 0 0 fetchmail: No mail for mail232173 at mail232173.popserver.pop.net fetchmail: POP3> QUIT fetchmail: POP3< +OK wodc7ps1.ffx.ops.us.uu.net signing off fetchmail: not swapping UID lists, no UIDs seen this query fetchmail: Query status=1 (NOMAIL) fetchmail: 5.6.0 querying 208.36.95.171 (protocol POP3) at F?s 23.Mar 2001, 09:17:26 EST fetchmail: POP3< +OK QPOP (version 2.53) at helen.afb.net starting. fetchmail: POP3> USER janina fetchmail: POP3< +OK Password required for janina. fetchmail: POP3> PASS * fetchmail: POP3< +OK janina has 2 messages (10383 octets). fetchmail: selecting or re-polling default folder fetchmail: POP3> STAT fetchmail: POP3< +OK 2 10383 fetchmail: POP3> LAST fetchmail: POP3< +OK 0 is the last read message. 2 messages for janina at 208.36.95.171 (10383 octets). fetchmail: POP3> LIST fetchmail: POP3< +OK 2 messages (10383 octets) fetchmail: POP3< 1 8265 fetchmail: POP3< 2 2118 fetchmail: POP3< . fetchmail: POP3> RETR 1 fetchmail: POP3< +OK 8265 octets reading message 1 of 2 (8265 octets) About to rewrite Reply-To: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> Rewritten version is Reply-To: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> About to rewrite Sender: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> Rewritten version is Sender: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> About to rewrite From: Alan Paganelli <alanandsuzanne at EARTHLINK.NET> Rewritten version is From: Alan Paganelli <alanandsuzanne at EARTHLINK.NET> About to rewrite To: MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU Rewritten version is To: MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU fetchmail: SMTP< 220 toccata.grg.afb.net ESMTP Sendmail 8.11.2/8.11.2; Fri, 23 Mar 2001 09:17:33 -0500 fetchmail: SMTP> EHLO localhost fetchmail: SMTP< 250-toccata.grg.afb.net Hello toccata.grg.afb.net [127.0.0.1], pleased to meet you fetchmail: SMTP< 250 ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES fetchmail: forwarding to localhost fetchmail: SMTP> MAIL FROM:<MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> fetchmail: SMTP< 550 5.0.0 Access denied fetchmail: SMTP> RSET fetchmail: SMTP< 250 2.0.0 Reset state fetchmail: Saved error is still 550 fetchmail: SMTP< 220 toccata.grg.afb.net ESMTP Sendmail 8.11.2/8.11.2; Fri, 23 Mar 2001 09:17:34 -0500 fetchmail: SMTP> HELO localhost fetchmail: SMTP< 250 toccata.grg.afb.net Hello toccata.grg.afb.net [127.0.0.1], pleased to meet you fetchmail: SMTP> MAIL FROM:<FETCHMAIL-DAEMON at localhost> fetchmail: SMTP< 550 5.0.0 Access denied not flushed fetchmail: POP3> RETR 2 fetchmail: POP3< +OK 2118 octets reading message 2 of 2 (2118 octets) About to rewrite Reply-To: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> Rewritten version is Reply-To: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> About to rewrite Sender: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> Rewritten version is Sender: "MIDI-MAG: Blind folks and their use of MIDI" <MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> About to rewrite From: jim turri <jturri at WAM.UMD.EDU> Rewritten version is From: jim turri <jturri at WAM.UMD.EDU> About to rewrite To: MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU Rewritten version is To: MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU fetchmail: forwarding to localhost fetchmail: SMTP> MAIL FROM:<MIDI-MAG at MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU> fetchmail: SMTP< 550 5.0.0 Access denied fetchmail: SMTP> RSET fetchmail: SMTP< 250 2.0.0 Reset state fetchmail: Saved error is still 550 fetchmail: SMTP< 220 toccata.grg.afb.net ESMTP Sendmail 8.11.2/8.11.2; Fri, 23 Mar 2001 09:17:35 -0500 fetchmail: SMTP> HELO localhost fetchmail: SMTP< 250 toccata.grg.afb.net Hello toccata.grg.afb.net [127.0.0.1], pleased to meet you fetchmail: SMTP> MAIL FROM:<FETCHMAIL-DAEMON at localhost> fetchmail: SMTP< 550 5.0.0 Access denied not flushed fetchmail: POP3> QUIT fetchmail: POP3< +OK Pop server at helen.afb.net signing off. fetchmail: not swapping UID lists, no UIDs seen this query fetchmail: SMTP> QUIT fetchmail: SMTP< 221 2.0.0 toccata.grg.afb.net closing connection fetchmail: Deleting fetchids file. fetchmail: fetchmail: sleeping at F?s 23.Mar 2001, 09:17:35 EST fetchmail: terminated with signal 2 fetchmail: Deleting fetchids file.
