I listed the contents of the debian less package, and there is a file /usr/lib/mime/pacages/less which contains the following: text/plain; less '%s'; needsterminal; priority=8 text/*; less '%s'; needsterminal; priority=2 */*; less '%s'; needsterminal; priority=0 Don't know for sure, but perhaps you can define stuff in here that determins less's behaviour on various mime types.
