Look under the "howtos" link you will find everything you want there.
There's a howto on hardware, and modems is one of the chapters.  It
will have a list of compatible modems.  Good rule of thumb is that
anything that isn't win$ and is hayes compatible should work fine.  

That's one nice thing about Linux, if you want docs, you can get them
in triplicate and all three copies will be accessible!
