You can either use FTP client in the regular "shell" mode or the FTP
interface provided by Emacs. I think it speaks quite well. Just type:
m-x ftp <ENTER>
then type in your FTP site. There is also a good package called Ange-FTP.
Did you try it? It has a widgit-like interface (or in Windows terms,
Explorer-like interface).
The same applies to "Telnet" program. You can either run it quietly in the
"shell mode" or use m-x telnet.
Definitely, terminal programs like Pine and Lynx do not run well neither in
"shell mode'" nor in "eterm mode".
