Hi, Chuck: Frame buffer support has never impacted any of my systems negatively. In fact, I find it rather cool to have screens that are 48 rows by 128 columns--the best config on my Thinkpad that also supports sighties. Another issue, though, is the version of X you're looking at. XFree 3.3.X is out of date. 4.0 was released almost a year ago, I think, and 4.1 is now also out.
