The other thing you can look at, although it's kind of messy, is jabber. That's what I'm using. The text client is imcom, and although it's not perfect it's reasonable. It'll let you talk to msn icq aol and a couple of others, if I remember correctly. You can either set up your own server or use jabber.org.
