The "H0" command says to hang up, while "H1" says to pick up the line, so for an initialization string "H0" is what you want. As for the "&F" command, your modem has several factory default sets built in, and without a digit you get "&F0". I once had a very similar problem to yours which was solved by switchingt those factory defaults to "&F1" which gave me hardware handshaking. The only other thing I can think of is to wonder if the 115200 speed might not be too fast for a 14.4 modem. Does it still fail if you lower that to 57600 or 38400? But count on it - it is not your ram or your CPU speed. I am sure someone will chime in here with better advice than I have at the moment, but you ought to be able to get much better performance than you reported with that setup.
