pdf_sec.ps patch

As for the services at Adobe, one should beware that since they came out
with Acrobat 5.0, they will discontinue any further enhancements to these
online services. It wouldn't surprise me if they eventually discontinue
them altogether. The Acrobat 5.0 reader has special MSAA based components
for windows screen readers. Sorry, us linux users lose out on this one:(.

Hi

I don't understand why you need to take those steps. You can send the file
to adobe:

pdf2txt at adobe.com

or

pdf2htm at adobe.com

I'm quoting from memory, so sorry if it's wrong. Here's a message from some
time ago.

Note that ps2ascii can also deal with pdf:

NAME
ps2ascii - Aladdin Ghostscript PostScript or PDF to ASCII
       translator

SYNOPSIS
       ps2ascii [input.ps [output.txt]]
       ps2ascii input.pdf [output.txt]

DESCRIPTION
ps2ascii extracts ASCII text from PostScript or PDF, using
gs(1). If the pathname "input.ps" is not specified,
PostScript is read from standard input; PDF input must
come from an explicitly-named file, not standard input.
If the pathname "output.txt" is not specified, the ASCII
text is written to standard output.

also, pstotext is nearly the same (both ps and pdf) but reported to
work better (ps2ascii suggests it). It is a separate package from gs,
and it is available in Debian (can't tell about the other ones).

However, to my knowledge, all free Linux documentation is written in
sgml (or sometimes LaTeX), so an html or ascii version must exist
somewhere.

/alessandro

Subject: pdf_sec.ps patch

Hi all,

I'm trying to convert a pdf file into a ps file. I plan to then convert the
ps file into ascii so I can read it. When I run pdf2ps, it tells me that the
pdf file is encrypted, and I should download a patch. I got the patch it
mentioned. However, when I do 'gs pdf_sec.ps', gs says that it can't open an
x display. How do I apply the patch? Is there a better way to read pdf files
in linux? Thanks.
Greg
