Yes, it was just a menu selection in the setup program. Dos and Linux will both initialize those ports, but the problem is that the speakup drivers assume the ports are already initialized so that they can probe for a device on them. And that happens before Linux gets a chance to initialize the ports. The soft reset from DOS leaves the ports already initialized, while the hard reset (with a front panel button) apparently wipes out all device initializations.
