Hi Chris,

     I didn't understand if you had a boot disk with Speakup on it, or are
you booting with the stock kernel that comes with RedHat.  By any chance
does the gibberish sound like the word "at"??  If so, speakup probably
isn't finding your synth and the "at" you're hearing is kudzu trying to
find out if there's a modem on the port where your synthesizer is.  The
easiest way to fix the keymap problem is to type from the prompt as
root: chkconfig --level 2345 keytable off

     Any questions call or write.  Calling will usually get a quicker
response.
