That being said, what it does is allow more then one programer to work on the code at once. The programer checks out potions of the code he wants to work on. Other programers can see that the code is checked out and it will prevent them from checking out the same portion of code later overwriting what he has done. It also allows changes to be reversed in small increments should a problem be found later. You will find that this is almost always used with a decent sized software project.
