compiling freeamp

No it doesn't.  It might have at one time but I've been using it for a
long time and it is mostly test based.  Chuck, if you do a ./configure
--help it will give you all of the flags it understands.  I wouldn't
be surprised if you could just shut off the gtk and tk stuff with a
switch to configure
