changing where the kernel expects the root device to be

Hello list. Hopefully this will be a quick and painless question. <grin>

I'd like to put a kernel that I've made on a disk and have it try to load
the root FS off something other than the drive I normally use. How can I
change where it expects the FS to be? I'd like to just have the kernel on
disk rather than having a boot loader like lilo.
