I haven't actually played with the nvram device although it's one of those things I want to play with at some point. It won't have any affect on your settings in linux though because linux doesn't use the bios or cmos after passing the lilo prompt. You could probably edit the cmos for affecting it under windows though. If you are having problems with it under linux then most likely you have power management turned on in your kernel.
