You need to get sound working or use the alsa drivers. You can make speak freely work in half duplex by editing the makefile rebuilding after a make clean and installing the new binaries. Basically speak freely thought the sound hardware was in one state and it wasn't. Regarding bns, I once had a termcap for it so you could use a bns as a talking terminal to Linux. Arrows were a bitch you had to use emacs keys c-f c-b c-n c-p but it was doable. Not sure how it was done might be able to get the termcap for you. Regards, Kerry.
