Hi: The main reason why speakup doesn't have a nice little menu interface for changing stuff is mainly because linux users generally are used to changing config files and stuff. Though there is the speakup-config script which I've not meddled with that is supposed to make this stuff more friendly. Building it into speakup itself is of course impractical as the program has to fit into the kernel and this would make it unnecessarily big.
