Speakup is command line based because Linux is cammond line based. While
you can run X, developing a screen reader for it is a lot bigger job and
the other Kirk (awsome programmer Kirk) chose to tackle the command line
version.

The truth is that while the graphical interface makes things easier for
some people, it has come with a high price for many others. I am not
convinced it has to be this way, but to not be this way would require
considering alternate access from the begining. The fact is that Windows
screen readers have cobbled access to the operating system. Microsoft
breaks them on a regular basis without warning (or regard) to the
companies making them.
