/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-spk is too big

Hi Terry:  Try using make bzlilo.  The Zimage make of linux will only
allow an image of 512k because it has to uncompress and load in
conventional memory.  The bzImage uncompresses to extented memory and
starts there.
