boot failure with console=null command line parameter on Linux 2.4.26

Hello,
I need to disable the console on an embedded device with ancient hardware (Freescale MX1 SOC (ARM)) running on Linux 2.4.26. So I changed the kernel comand line to "console=null". There are no messages printed but apparently the device doesn't boot with this setup.
Can somebody please give me a hint where to search for the problem? Any help is very much appreciated.
I have a JTAG interface on the device so I can debug a little with the help of that. But currently I have no idea why the boot fails.

Greetings
Sebastian
