Could the people experiencing issues with this hardware,
please give the attached copy of hdparm (pre-release) a go
on their troublesome systems, and report back?

This version uses ATA_12 for PACKET IDENTIFY and any subsequent
commands to a PACKET device (CD, DVD, TAPE, etc..),
and ATA_16 for everything else.

With the caveat that the first command is nearly always an ATA_16
IDENTIFY command.

A sector count of "1" is provided for all IDENTIFY / PACKET IDENTIFY
commands, or at least that's the intent of the code.  :)
