[ definitely ATA passthru is the way to go but... ]

discrete taskfiles?
multi-PIO?
setting transfer speed?

and if you are talking about IDE ioctls there is (unfortunately)
much more than HDIO_DRIVE_[CMD,TASK,TASKFILE]
