You *can* insert a module by writing into /dev/kmem; it is just a bad
idea. Similarily you *can* suspend machine by echo 3 >
/proc/acpi/sleep; it is just a bad idea for same reason. 

Now, perhaps semi-standard suspend script published in
Documentation/power would be good idea. How would you want your events
sent?
