Man who says cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it :-)

Well, there is only one client machine active currently, so I dunno if the
supposed locking issue only arises with multiple clients. I guess not, as it is
a read-only mount in my case.

It basically works for me, just the idmap thing is not up yet. Files appear as
UID 4294967294 and thus SUID binaries fail, because, well, they do not have
UID 0. ("mount: you have to be root to do this").

In fact, there would not be anything wrong with running an idmapper, but the
problem is that there would not be a lookup database this early. ("requested
translation method 'nsswitch' is not available") -- which seems to be a bit
off, as /usr/bin/id is perfectly able to do lookups at this stage.

Speaking of translations, the manpage appears to be truncated - novell.com
mentions a "[Translation]" section[1], but idmapd.conf(5) does not.

I read that NFSv4 uses usernames instead of UIDs, well ok, so couldn't it also
encode the UID in string fashion and use that as the transported username?
(Assuming a homogenous system where both sides understand this.)

Well, pivot-rooting into an nfsv4 essentially makes it an nfsroot. For added
fun, there's also AUFS in the game.

They do, now.

lo6?
- the kernel only allows one loopback device
(it does have multiple ones already, one per namespace, so makes me wonder
why there can't be multiple ones. Solaris has lo0 too, right? Basically
lo would just be a veth-like device where one end is both ends.)
- lo6 as in.. IPv6? lo already has ::1/128 assigned.

It does not know about clnt. That btw, the manpage for rpcbind is also
incomplete - does not list xprt, sched, bind.
