Unable to connect to network (ethernet or wireless) after updating Ubuntu 12.04LTS

Greetings Linux Demigods,

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from DVD to my laptop while it was
online via an ethernet RJ45 jack plugged into my router. It has a
wireless card in it as well. After installation, I was able to connect
to the internet when I was plugged directly into my router. I was not
able to use the internet via my wireless network card. I do have a
wireless card installed and I connect to it fine with Windows on the
same machine, which is a dell inspiron E1505. I chose to not deal with
the wireless issue and keep using the direct plug in.

I then updated my machine using the Update Manager application
provided by Ubuntu. It downloaded and installed about 157MB of
updates. After these updates all successfully intalled, I rebooted my
machine and can no longer connect at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can get to a command prompt,
but please do not assume I know anything. Linux runs so much better on
my machine and I am trying to get all the basic stuff working so that
I can switch from Windows. I need to connect with both my wireless and
ethernet network cards. Please help.

Thank you very much.

-Steve
