absolutely nothing will show up in any logs.

after a reboot, the linux kernel will continue to
recognize the NIC.  The NIC, though, will not
establish an ethernet link at all.

if the adapter supports wake-on-lan often it's never really powered off when you reset your machine, as obviously the NIC retains power and actually *works* when your computer is off.

Try draining all the power from the unit completely: (1) unplug powercord (2) push the powerbutton for 8-30 seconds. This might help if the adapter is too confused to work.
