i have a linux router with 6 gigabit ethernet adapters. i have found that, when i use a cheap, off-brand switch, occasionally a power surge, or something, will fry my ethernet card and crash the router. Afterward, the NIC is completely worthless. Has anyone ever encountered this problem??? absolutely nothing will show up in any logs. after a reboot, the linux kernel will continue to recognize the NIC. The NIC, though, will not establish an ethernet link at all.
if the adapter supports wake-on-lan often it's never really powered off when you reset your machine, as obviously the NIC retains power and actually *works* when your computer is off.
Try draining all the power from the unit completely: (1) unplug powercord (2) push the powerbutton for 8-30 seconds. This might help if the adapter is too confused to work.
maybe it helps. Cheers, AUke - To unsubscribe from this list: send the line "unsubscribe linux-net" in the body of a message to majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx More majordomo info at http://vger.kernel.org/majordomo-info.html
