Sounds like you may have an IRQ problem or similar, disturbing the
download. Or maybe too high rate for your serial port.
I tried to renice pppd to -20 but pdflush, reiserfs and other kernel daemon
they have prevalence
over the ppp.
CPU consumption is not likely the problem. More likely something
blocking/hanging your system for too long.
Which kernel are you using?
What filesystem?
On what kind of harddrives?
Any errors from pppd when doing this?
