Forcedeth or IPRoute2 issue

I have a 2.6.15 kernel with 2.6.14-051107 on it.

   Machine A is an x86 based RaQ3 with a e100 network module
            IP 172.16.0.83/16
Machine B is an x86 using a forcedeth network module
            IP 172.16.0.85/16
Machine C is an Sparc using the sunhme network module
            IP 172.16.0.90/16
Machine D is an MIPS using the tulip network module
            IP 172.16.0.88/16

On Machines A,C, and D the following commands works.
ip route add default via 172.16.0.254 dev eth0

On Machine B the command fails
ip route add default via 172.16.0.254 dev eth0
       RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable

If I change the IP to use /24 it works

Any suggestions or fixes for this issue??
