The symptoms of the problem are:
I can ifconfig the eth0 device, but when I do a ping I get "host
unreachable".
The logs say
Dec  5 20:54:12 localhost kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit
timed out

Sounds like something funny is happening with respect to the card/driver, almost as if you might be losing interrupts ?

Find out what IRQ each card has after your resume ( cat /proc/interrupts )
 and watch the numebr of interrupts when then attempting to transmit
 (i.e. see if network card IRQs are going off ).
