IPSEC: Soft lifetime bytes

Shouldn't the kernel send an SADB_EXPIRE message to the IKE daemon when the soft lifetime in terms of bytes is exceeded? I am using 2.6.0-test5 with racoon, and racoon receives expire messages when the soft lifetime in terms of time is exceeded, but not when the bytes sent/received soft lifetime is exceeded. For lifetimes specified in bytes, racoon only receives an expire message when the hard lifetime has been exceeded. Thanks.
