Hi James,

You're running a what is called "3-wire setup", that mean your cable have only 3 valid wires and one that is dangling, either because of the patch cable or the network sockets itself, I had this problem and was tearin my hair apart because of the asymetry in traffic speed that you saw and also because that was was NO bloody change on the card and switch leds, they were happyly reporting 100Mb/s, full duplex even !!!
The situation cracked when I tryed the cable on an old 10 Mb only hub and that one didn't want to lit its leds, the capacitive coupling or whatever was making the switch show corect link leds was not working anymore. So after that I experimented with the treacherous cable by repairing it and then cuting a wire on each active pair on turn and that was it, in most cases on 100Mb/s the switch and card leds were OK but the speed was gone on the afected pair/directiom.

Hope that helps,

Mircea C.
Hi Mircea,
Thanks very much for your suggestions. My only objection to your reply is that I get decent transfer rates (both ways) and few collisions when I use the same hardware
booted into windows XP. So i'd figured it was a driver issue............

James.

You need to make sure the full/half duplex mode setting for you laptop side matches the other side, e.g. the switch, hub or NIC.

Thanks for the suggestion D, but it unfortunately full duplex makes *no* difference :-(
Collisions are still massive.
Have pretty well run out of ideas.....

Hi folks,
I have redhat 8 installed on an recent Asus L3C laptop. Uses the 8139too module.
Ethernet seems to work, but
i/s very slow /(about 500k/sec) sending data *from* the laptop. (The other way is ok).
Massive collisions seem to occur (see below)
Anybody have any idea?

Thanks in advance,
James.
