massive collisions on RealTek8139 (kernelmodule 8139too) in kernel 2.4.18-19.8.0

Hi folks,
I have redhat 8 installed on an recent Asus L3C laptop. Uses the 8139too module.
Ethernet seems to work, but
i/s very slow /(about 500k/sec) sending data *from* the laptop. (The other way is ok).
Massive collisions seem to occur (see below)
Anybody have any idea?

Thanks in advance,
James.
