A machine which has a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and the wrong broadcast to 10.255.255.255 might answer to pings which are send to 10.25255.255 even if the netmask is wrong. The broadcast address of 10.0.1.0/24 is usually 10.0.1.255. On the other hand 10.0.1.0 can also be a valid host address in 10.0.0.0/8 or 10.0.0.0/16.
