   How does the NIC perform the segmentation?  Does the 
   NIC perform flow control by monitoring the ACKs 
   received or does the 64k segment get segmented and sent 
   without regard for flow control or is some other flow 
   control algorithm used?

No, it gets a template tcp/ip header + (64K - header_size) of
data.  Then the NIC generates MTU sized packets, generating fresh
TCP/IP headers based upon the given template.
