Common uses of large numbers of IP aliases?

Are there common uses of large numbers of IP aliases anymore? (say more
than 4/16 for failover or conglomerating a few DNS/FTP servers whose
addresses are known)?

It was commonly used for virtual web servers for a while, but newer
HTTP protocol has a way of handling it which is in common use now, so
I understand that is rather deprecated.

Thanks!
