Just to clarity, you are on an x86 system when doing these tests? No problems with modprobe or setting up the interface. At 100Mb get a full duplex message. But at 1000Mb I never receive packets at all (no RX packets, no errors), while at 100Mb I can get packets from ping in the ifconfig count but they dont seem to do anything (and arp just reports incomplete HW address). The lights indicate the correct speed on the card and switch, and also on crossover. Ok, thanks for this report. I just came across two 3c996-T cards, and I'll see if I can reproduce your problem with those. If not I'll give you debug patches to try out.
