ok, I have a couple of cards with this chipset:
eth0: Tigon3 [partno(3C996B-T) rev 0105 PHY(5401)] (PCI:33MHz:32-bit) 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet 00:04:76:db:65:ea

these are 3Com 3C996B-T copper 32/64 bit cards.

No problems with modprobe or setting up the interface. At 100Mb get a full
duplex message. But at 1000Mb I never receive packets at all (no RX packets,
no errors), while at 100Mb I can get packets from ping in the ifconfig count
but they dont seem to do anything (and arp just reports incomplete HW address).

The lights indicate the correct speed on the card and switch, and also on
crossover.
